CREATE A POSITIVE SAFETY CULTURE

Creating a positive safety culture is one of the most beneficial things an employer can do in the workplace.  This was highlighted by the Accident Compensation Commission, Fiji (ACCF) CEO, Mr. Parvez Akbar during an awareness session at Paradise Beverages for their staff and management based in Lautoka, on 08th September 2023.

Mr Akbar said this can be achieved by clear and regular communication on safety matters, training, leading by example, encouraging reporting and consulting with workers regarding safety. He also emphasised the need to take preventative actions, investigate all accidents and near misses, celebrate safety successes and create an environment where health, safety and wellbeing is part of everyday business.

Leaders need to demonstrate that there is nothing more important than the health, safety and wellbeing of their workers, and leaders must be held accountable for this. Workers are also encouraged to take individual ownership for their health, safety and wellbeing, and of those around them.

Mr. Akbar highlighted the benefits of the Accident Compensation Scheme for victims of motor vehicle, employment and school accidents. Particularly given the challenges that existed prior to the introduction of the Accident Compensation Scheme. For workers, these included having to prove fault of the employer, being caught up in protracted, costly and acrimonious legal proceedings, and unreasonable exclusions.

The session also covered the rights, entitlements and obligations under the Accident Compensation Act 2017. Mr Akbar explained to the attendees how to apply for compensation and the need to notify ACCF and Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations of all injuries and deaths from employment accidents.
